DoorKing Keypad & Intercom Repair: The Sherman Oaks Owner’s Guide

We stock DoorKing keypad and intercom replacement parts on our trucks and install them the same day in most Sherman Oaks cases. Installed repair prices typically run $285-$690 depending on whether we’re rebuilding the existing keypad, swapping the intercom board, or replacing the whole surface-mount unit. The usual discovery is unremarkable: a keypad that stops accepting codes on Tuesday, an intercom that rings but won’t release the gate, or a call box that works from the house but not at the drive.

Most DoorKing failures we see in Sherman Oaks are environmental before they’re electrical. UV exposure off the asphalt along Ventura Boulevard cooks the membrane keypads until the digits wear through. Irrigation overspray finds its way into the bottom of the call box and corrodes the terminal strip. And the extreme heat cycles between a Sherman Oaks August and a January cold snap cause solder joints on older intercom boards to crack and lose contact. You can hear it before you see it: the keypad beeps on some keys, not others, or the intercom speaker crackles when you press the call button. By the time a customer calls us, they’ve usually already reset the breaker, reprogrammed the code twice, and gotten a key fob working as a workaround. What they haven’t done is opened the box to see which part failed and why.

Which DoorKing Models This Applies To

This repair scope covers the DoorKing 1800, 1802, and 1812 access control systems, along with the 1814 microPLUS and any older 1500-series telephone entry units we still see on Sherman Oaks properties that haven’t been upgraded. The keypad on a DoorKing surface-mount call box is not universal across all those systems, even though they look nearly identical from the outside. The 1812 accessory keypad uses a different ribbon connector than the 1802. The 1814 changed the membrane overlay dimensions by roughly a quarter inch. If you buy the wrong one on a parts site, it won’t seat properly, and you’ll either crack the plastic bezel forcing it or short the controller when you plug it in.

How to identify what you have before calling: open the cabinet door and look for the model tag on the inside face of the enclosure. DoorKing prints the model and serial on a silver sticker near the bottom hinge. We’ll ask you for that number when you call, and if the sticker is missing or faded, we’ll pull the board revision off the silkscreen once we’re on site. As for OEM versus aftermarket, our honest position is that DoorKing OEM keypads and intercom boards are the only thing we install on DoorKing controllers. Aftermarket membrane overlays exist online, but we’ve seen several Sherman Oaks units fail within six months because the adhesive backing separates in the Valley heat. If we can’t get the OEM part, we’ll tell you that on the phone with a lead time, not pad the appointment with an aftermarket gamble.

Signs Your DoorKing Keypad & Intercom Is Failing

Signs Your DoorKing Keypad & Intercom Is Failing
  • Some keys work and others don’t. This is usually a worn dome switch under the membrane. The digit you use most, often the first digit of the code or the # key, fails first. We replace the membrane as a unit, not individual switches, because the backing stays consistent that way.
  • The keypad accepts the code but the gate won’t open. The keypad may be fine. This points to the intercom board’s lock relay or the controller’s relay output. If we hear the relay click, we move downstream and check the operator input. In Sherman Oaks, we see this after power surges from SCE outages along Coldwater Canyon.
  • The intercom rings but you can’t hear the caller. This is typically the speaker element or the intercom board’s amplifier section. Older DoorKing intercoms with electrolytic capacitors start to sound like a megaphone in a tunnel. We replace the board or the speaker, depending on which has failed, and we photograph both before closing the box.
  • The call button works but the keypad is dead. A dead keypad with a live intercom tells us the keypad harness is unplugged, broken, or the controller isn’t seeing it. On DoorKing units, the keypad cable routes through the same gland as the antenna cable, so any moisture intrusion at the gland corrodes both at once.
  • You hear crackling or static through the intercom speaker. Usually a failing capacitor in the audio circuit or a corroded speaker wire at the terminal. If it crackles only when the gate operator cycles, we chase a ground loop. We’ve also traced this to lawn sprinklers hitting the enclosure from below.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For Sherman Oaks, installed DoorKing keypad and intercom repair prices break down like this:

  • Keypad membrane replacement: $285-$385 installed, including the OEM membrane, bezel cleaning, and reprogramming verification.
  • Intercom board replacement: $420-$590 installed, including the OEM or OEM-equivalent board, terminal cleanup, and a full test of call, talk, and gate release functions.
  • Complete surface-mount call box replacement: $590-$690 installed, including the new DoorKing enclosure, keypad, intercom board, and a re-termination of every wire at the new box.

The range comes down to which DoorKing model you have and whether the enclosure itself has suffered enough UV or moisture damage that reusing it would invite a callback. You’ll get the exact number in writing before any work starts, as always under our Haven Standard Clause 1. That price covers the part, the labor, the programming confirmation, and the photo record we leave behind. Every DoorKing keypad and intercom repair we complete is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If it isn’t right, we make it right within a year, no argument and no fee. We work on all nine major gate automation brands including LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls, but on DoorKing hardware we only install DoorKing parts.

Low-voltage keypad and intercom work is safer than touching the operator’s high-voltage side, but it is still electrical, and a mis-wired terminal can blow a controller worth several hundred dollars. What you can safely check: confirm the breaker is on, confirm the keypad lights or beeps, and confirm whether the issue is only at the keypad or also at the house phone or gate operator. Then stop. DoorKing call boxes are wired in series with the gate controller, photo-eyes, and sometimes a telephone entry board. Crossing the wrong two terminals while the power is on, even at 24 volts control voltage, can ruin the board you were trying to save. The other risk is water: one Sherman Oaks homeowner opened his call box on a wet morning and shorted the keypad harness against the metal enclosure. The repair bill doubled. If you’ve already opened the box and the wires look like spaghetti, call us at (213) 463-6296 and we’ll sort it out without making you feel stupid for looking.
