The part that usually needs welding is not a Ghost Controls part at all. It’s the gate itself, the hinge post, or the steel plate the Ghost Controls bracket bolts to. Ghost Controls sells the actuator, the arm, the control board, and the mounting hardware. They don’t sell a replacement section of your gate frame or a new post cap with a reinforced plate. That’s where fabrication work comes in, and it’s why matching the fabrication to the specific Ghost Controls mounting pattern matters.
One compatibility gotcha: the bolt pattern on a Ghost Controls post bracket is not the same as a LiftMaster or Mighty Mule bracket. If someone welds in a generic plate and drills it for the old holes, the next time the opener gets replaced the new bracket won’t line up and the plate has to be cut out and redone. We fabricate with the Ghost Controls pattern in mind from the start, so the plate outlasts the opener it was built for.
OEM versus aftermarket: for the opener’s moving parts, we recommend Ghost Controls OEM components. - The gate sags at the hinge side but the opener still runs. This almost always means a hinge weld or hinge plate is cracking at the post. The opener pushes, the gate flexes at the weld, and if it isn’t addressed, the hinge tears out completely and the gate drops.
- The opener arm is tearing loose from the gate frame. Ghost Controls arms mount to a bracket that’s attached to the gate itself. If that bracket was through-bolted through thin tubing, the tubing eventually starts to rip around the holes. We weld reinforcing plate behind the mount, redrill, and remount.
- You can see daylight through the gate frame at the weld joints. Welded tube gates crack at the joints first, usually at the corners where the load concentrates. A hairline crack is a warning; once you can see light through it, the joint is close to full separation.
- The post visibly moved or tipped, and the opener now struggles on the last 10 degrees of travel. A post that moves changes the geometry of the arm travel, which fights the motor and burns through capacitors faster than it should. We check post plumb and weld in post stiffeners before we ever adjust the opener.
- The gate oscillates or shakes around the midpoint of travel. This points to a broken or loose mid-rail weld or a cracked gusset. The gate shakes because the frame isn’t rigid anymore, and every cycle makes the crack longer.
