Signs Your Viking Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

• The gate sags or drags at the latch side. This usually means the hinge weldment has stretched or cracked at the top hinge, letting the leaf drop out of square. The fix is typically re-welding the hinge plate with a gusset added, not just stacking washers under the hinge.
• A sharp creak or pop when the gate moves through mid-travel. Popping sounds point to a cracked weld somewhere in the drive-arm path, often at the point where the arm bolts to the gate bracket. Each cycle flexes the crack open a little more.
• The operator runs fine but the gate only moves partway, then binds. This is frequently a bent or broken drive-arm bracket throwing the geometry off just enough that the motor’s limit switch can’t complete the cycle. The operator isn’t dead; the welded connection is.
• You can see daylight through a hinge plate or a rust line running along the weld bead. In Sherman Oaks, the marine layer and the summer dry heat cycle steel hard. A rust line along a weld usually means the protective coating failed first, and the weld is now the weak point.

You can safely check a few things: look for visible cracks in the weld beads, check whether the gate leaf has dropped out of square, and take a photo of the operator’s model plate so you know which Viking series you own. What you shouldn’t do is attempt to weld the part yourself. Welding a load-bearing hinge or drive-arm bracket requires proper penetration and the right filler, and a cold or brittle weld on a moving gate can fail suddenly, with the full weight of the leaf behind it.
