FAAC Welding & Fabrication: The Sherman Oaks Owner’s Guide

We stock and install FAAC-compatible welding and fabrication work in Sherman Oaks, with most bracket, hinge, and structural repairs running between $275 and $850 installed depending on the extent of the fabrication and whether the gate needs to come off its hinges. We carry common FAAC mounting plates, weld-on hinge assemblies, and reinforcement stock on the truck, so most Sherman Oaks jobs are completed same-day once we’ve assessed the break. The typical call starts with a gate that’s sagging, dragging on the driveway, or making a metallic groan near the hinge post, and it ends with a welded repair that’s photographed and documented before we leave.

What we usually find in Sherman Oaks is a fatigue crack or a rust-weakened weld at a stress point: the operator mounting bracket, the bottom hinge, or the point where the gate leaf meets the hinge post. FAAC operators are stout, but they deliver a lot of torque through a small mounting footprint, and when the gate itself is heavy or the hinges are worn, that stress concentrates in the metal. We fabricate the repair to match the existing steel, not just patch it.

Which FAAC Models This Applies To

Our welding and fabrication work covers the full range of FAAC swing and slide gate operators commonly installed in Sherman Oaks: the 400, 412, 415, 422, 770, S450H, S700H, S800H, 844, and C720/C721 series. The welding need isn’t usually inside the operator itself. It’s in the surrounding metal: the mounting plate the operator bolts to, the gate frame where the arm attaches, the hinges that carry the leaf, or the rack mounts on slide gates.

One FAAC-specific compatibility note: older 400-series operators use a different bolt pattern and arm geometry than the S-series. If your gate was installed before about 2010 with a 400-series unit, the mounting fabrication we do has to be cut and drilled to that older pattern. We measure and match on-site rather than drilling new holes through the existing plate, which weakens it. When OEM replacement parts aren’t available or would take too long, we use domestically sourced steel of the same gauge and a weld procedure that doesn’t warp the operator plate. A thin plate with too much heat becomes a banana, and then your operator sits cocked and chews through bushings.

Signs Your FAAC Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

Signs Your FAAC Welding & Fabrication Is Failing
  • The gate sags visibly at the latch end. This almost always traces to a worn or broken bottom hinge weld at the post. The leaf’s weight sits on that hinge, and when the weld stretches, the whole gate drops.
  • You hear a pop or groan when the gate moves. A cracked weld flexes under load, and the sound is the metal faces grinding against each other. In Sherman Oaks we hear this most after the rainy season, when moisture has worked into a hairline crack and accelerated rust.
  • The FAAC operator strains or the gate stops mid-travel. When the mounting bracket flexes or the hinge binds, the operator’s obstruction sensing trips early. The board thinks it’s hitting a car, but it’s hitting a bent piece of steel.
  • Visible rust staining or a dark crack line at a weld or bolt hole. This is a fatigue crack in the making. On powder-coated gates, the coating spiderwebs before the steel lets go.
  • The gate doesn’t align so the lock or magnetic latch engages cleanly. Shifted metal means shifted alignment, and that means the FAAC leaf-stop and close limits have to be reset after we finish the weld work.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Sherman Oaks, most FAAC-related welding and fabrication runs between $275 and $850 installed. Smaller jobs include one broken hinge re-welded in place. Larger jobs involve pulling the gate leaf, fabricating a new reinforced hinge plate off-site or on the truck, re-hanging the gate, and re-setting the operator limits. The price you’re quoted is a flat number written down and handed to you before we strike an arc: no hourly meter running, no surprise at the end. That’s Clause 1 of our Haven Standard.

What moves the price is whether the gate has to come off (a 400-pound steel leaf isn’t lifted by hand), whether we’re repairing existing steel or adding reinforcement, and whether the operator’s travel limits need re-programming after we’re done. Every weld job includes a documented photo record: the crack as found, the weld cleaned and prepped, the finished repair, and the gate hung and running. We warranty our fabrication work for 365 days under the Done Right Promise. If the weld fails or the gate sags again within that year, we come back and make it right at no charge.

You can safely check a few things before you call. Look at the hinge welds with a flashlight and see if you can spot a hairline crack or rust stain running along the bead. Push gently on the gate near the bottom hinge while someone watches the weld: if you see movement, that’s meaningful. You can photograph what you find and measure the gap under the latch end with a tape measure.

What you shouldn’t do is fire up a welder on a gate that’s connected to a live FAAC operator. The current from the weld can find its way back through the operator ground and take out the board. We’ve seen it more than once in Sherman Oaks: a homeowner welds a hinge in place, and the operator that worked fine before the repair won’t respond after. Welding near an energized circuit board, capacitors, and limit switches is an invitation to buy a $400 control board. We disconnect and isolate the operator before any weld work, and we re-test everything before we put the system back in service. If you’re not set up to isolate the electronics and support the gate safely, call us at (213) 463-6296 and we’ll get it done properly.
